CAREER & CERTIFICATION GUIDANCE IN AIRFIELD GROUND LIGHTING
Airfield Ground Lighting is a specialised field within airport electrical and airside infrastructure. It combines electrical engineering, airport operations, visual guidance, lighting technology, safety, testing, maintenance and aviation standards. This guide shows the career paths, skills, training options and preparation steps to build expertise in it.
Career guidance — not advice, an endorsement or a job promise. This guide is general information for people learning AGL. Training providers, employers and job examples are named only as examples, so check current details with them directly. A certificate records training completion; it does not authorise anyone to work on an aerodrome. Series-circuit AGL equipment can carry lethal voltages, and the testing and fault-finding outlines here are study and interview prompts, not work methods.

Who Can Enter
WHO CAN BUILD A CAREER IN AGL?
AGL is not limited to one educational background. A strong foundation in electrical systems helps, but practical AGL knowledge comes from understanding how the complete airfield lighting system works.

Skills
SKILLS YOU NEED FOR AN AGL CAREER
Master the series circuit first. Understand how each element connects and how failures propagate through the whole circuit:
CCRPrimary CablePrimary ConnectorIsolating TransformerSecondary ConnectorLight Fixture
Know series-circuit principles, constant-current operation, continuity, insulation, open-circuit and short-circuit conditions, leakage problems and cable faults.
Testing Mindset
THINK IN FAULT CATEGORIES, NOT REPLACEMENTS
A testing engineer separates the type of problem before touching equipment, which prevents random replacement of parts.
Componentfault
Circuitfault
Controlfault
Installationfault
Photometricissue
A good professional can always answer: What failed? Where? Why? What evidence confirms it? What should be tested next?

Certification & Training
AGL CERTIFICATIONS & TRAINING PROGRAMS
A certificate documents completion of a training programme. Practical AGL competence also comes from understanding systems and applying that knowledge in the field. There is no single certification that universally defines an AGL career; requirements depend on role, employer and project.
AGL-CAP
Airfield Training Academy presents Airfield Lighting & Design Certification Programs and shows testimonials from AGL-CAP graduates. Review current programme details, entry requirements, syllabus, delivery format and certification conditions directly with the provider before enrolling.
ADB SAFEGATE Training Academy
Structured AGL training in online, instructor-led, classroom and on-site formats.
- AGL Essentials & Maintenance
- Fault-finding & Repair
- Managing AGL Maintenance
- Airfield Design
- Installation Awareness
- Inspection & Audit
The 2026 calendar also covers series-circuit troubleshooting.
ICAO / Indian Aviation Academy
ICAO Training lists Aeronautical Ground Lights Serviceability Standards and Maintenance, developed by Indian Aviation Academy, New Delhi. A five-day instructor-led technical course for airport operations executives and airside maintenance engineers, with DGCA aerodrome inspectors/auditors and aerodrome planning executives as secondary groups.
How to choose AGL training
Certificate vs practical skill. A certificate supports your profile but should not replace understanding. Aim for: Knowledge + Practical Exposure + Troubleshooting + Documentation + Standards Awareness.
India
CAREERS IN AGL IN INDIA
The Indian airport and consultancy market includes roles in AGL design, electrical engineering, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and airport infrastructure. Current 2026 examples include an AECOM AGL Expert position in Gurugram (runway, taxiway, apron, approach and guidance systems, CCR sizing, circuiting, photometric data, vendor submittals, installation supervision and commissioning) and an AtkinsRéalis AGL engineering position in Mumbai (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, BIM workflows, cable management, design reports, electrical calculations). Job titles vary considerably between organisations.

Software skills worth learning
CAD
AGL layouts, circuit drawings and infrastructure plans.
Electrical calculation
System design and electrical calculations.
Photometry software
Lighting calculations and photometric assessment.
Excel & BIM
BOQs, cable and transformer schedules, test data, tracking; BIM for coordinated design.
Interview Preparation
HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN AGL INTERVIEW
Do not prepare only by memorising definitions. Be ready to explain how a system works, identify a fault, interpret a test result or describe how you would approach an airport project.
Troubleshooting: “One runway light is not working. What will you do?”
Don’t answer “replace the light.” Show engineering thinking:
- Confirm the symptom
- Identify the circuit
- Check whether other fixtures are affected
- Check transformer and connector connections
- Take electrical measurements safely
- Trace the fault systematically
- Identify the failed component
- Rectify the cause
- Test the circuit again
- Document the result
Structure every answer
- Definition: what it is
- Function: what it does
- Application: where it is used
- Technical principle: how it works
- Practical example: a field case
- Safety / standards: where relevant
Scenario drills
- Complete circuit unavailable: CCR → cable → connectors → transformers → fixtures
- One fixture out: fixture, secondary connection, transformer, local wiring
- Several fixtures out: series circuit, primary cable, connector, CCR, common issue
- Lights work but photometry fails: alignment, condition, contamination, lamp/LED, geometry, measurement conditions, operating current

The 12 career paths, the 9-stage roadmap, the 90-day plan, the “Certify” step, the interview answers and the FAQ are general suggestions. They do not promise employment, pay, promotion or competence, and “Certify” means documenting your own learning; this page issues no certificate or credential. Troubleshooting and testing outlines are generic prompts for study and interviews. They are not procedures, and no step may be carried out on live equipment except by authorised personnel under approved isolation and permit-to-work.

It is not professional engineering, legal, employment or career-counselling advice, and using it does not create any professional, client or employment relationship.
- Safety. Work on series circuits, constant current regulators (CCRs), isolating transformers, cables and connectors can be fatal. Always apply the aerodrome’s permit-to-work and isolation/LOTO procedures, prove dead, use correctly rated instruments and PPE, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Nothing on this page authorises work on live equipment or the bypassing of any safety device or interlock.
