CCR TESTING VS SERIES CIRCUIT TESTING
Two commissioning tests that are often lumped together but check completely different halves of an AGL system — CCR testing verifies that the Constant Current Regulator is producing and controlling the required current, while series circuit testing verifies that the complete field circuit connected to it is electrically healthy. One is about the power source; the other is about the path and equipment that source feeds.

CCR Testing
The CCR is the controlled power source for the AGL series circuit. CCR testing verifies that the regulator provides the required output and operates correctly at its specified settings.

Typical checks include:
- Input supply and output current
- Current steps and regulation
- Overcurrent protection, short-circuit/fault response
- Alarm functions, local and remote control
- Monitoring, indications, displays, and communication/interface functions
Series Circuit Testing
Series-circuit testing focuses on the complete field circuit, rather than only the CCR.

Typical checks may include:
- Cable continuity and insulation resistance
- Circuit resistance/impedance
- Isolation transformer and connector condition
- Circuit integrity and ground/leakage condition
- Fault location/monitoring and operational response
The exact tests depend on the AGL system design and approved procedure.
Verifying the CCR's Brightness Steps
A CCR may have several brightness/current steps. The test verifies that the CCR selects the correct step, produces and regulates the specified current, responds correctly to control commands, and generates appropriate alarms when applicable.
STEP 1 → LOW CURRENT STEP 2 → ↑ STEP 3 → ↑ STEP 4 → ↑ STEP 5 → ↑ STEP 6 → HIGH CURRENT
The actual current values and tolerances must come from the CCR manufacturer and project specification.

Continuity verifies that the intended conductive path is complete. Insulation resistance verifies that the circuit insulation is sufficiently sound and does not allow excessive leakage. Both sit inside series circuit testing, not CCR testing.

This is one of the most important distinctions between the two tests.

Passing One Test Doesn't Prove the Other Is Healthy
CCR │ ▼ OUTPUT CURRENT ✔ │ ▼ PRIMARY CABLE │ ✕ INSULATION FAULT │ ▼ LIGHTS
The CCR can pass its own test while the field circuit still has cable insulation failure, an open circuit, a damaged connector, a failed isolation transformer, or a fixture fault. A CCR passing its test does not automatically mean the AGL series circuit is healthy.
CCR │ ✕ REGULATION FAULT │ ▼ SERIES CIRCUIT │ ▼ ELECTRICALLY HEALTHY ✔
The field circuit may have good continuity, insulation, transformers, and connections, while the CCR has a control, regulation, protection, or output-current problem. A healthy series circuit does not automatically prove the CCR is functioning correctly.
Both tests are required — neither one substitutes for the other.
Testing the Complete System Together
After individual testing, the complete system can be tested to verify the interaction between the CCR and the field circuit.
CCR │ ▼ CURRENT STEP │ ▼ SERIES CIRCUIT │ ▼ ISOLATION TRANSFORMERS │ ▼ AGL FIXTURES │ ▼ LIGHT OUTPUT
For a complete AGL acceptance/commissioning test, this system-level verification is often as important as the individual equipment tests.

"IS THE COMPLETE CIRCUIT
ELECTRICALLY HEALTHY?"
One-line distinction: CCR testing checks the source of controlled current, while series circuit testing checks the path and connected AGL equipment receiving that current.
CCR Testing vs Series Circuit Testing
CCR testing verifies the performance, regulation, protection, control, and monitoring of the Constant Current Regulator.
Series circuit testing verifies the electrical integrity and performance of the complete AGL series circuit connected to the CCR. Both are required for commissioning: the CCR test confirms the power source is doing its job, and the series circuit test confirms the field it feeds — cables, connectors, isolation transformers, and fixtures — is sound.
Practical AGL sequence: CCR test → "Power source OK?" → Series circuit test → "Field circuit OK?" → Functional test → "Complete AGL system OK?"

Frequently Asked Questions
CCR testing verifies that the Constant Current Regulator itself is producing and controlling the required current correctly. Series circuit testing verifies that the complete field circuit connected to the CCR — cables, connectors, isolation transformers, and fixtures — is electrically healthy.
No. The CCR can pass its own test while the field circuit still has an insulation fault, an open circuit, a damaged connector, or a failed isolation transformer. Both tests need to be performed independently.
No. The field circuit can have good continuity, insulation, and connections while the CCR itself has a regulation, protection, or output-current problem. A healthy circuit does not prove the CCR is functioning correctly.
CCR testing typically uses a multimeter, current meter, and the control/monitoring interface. Series circuit testing typically uses an insulation resistance tester, resistance/impedance test equipment, and circuit monitoring equipment.
Both are part of series circuit testing, not CCR testing. Continuity verifies the intended conductive path is complete, while insulation resistance verifies the circuit insulation prevents excessive leakage.
Check the CCR output first. If the CCR output is correct, move to the series circuit to check whether it's healthy. If the circuit is healthy too, check the fixtures and transformers. This separates a power-source problem from a field-circuit problem.
Yes. A system-level functional test verifies the interaction between the CCR and the field circuit together, and for acceptance/commissioning it's often as important as the individual equipment tests.
Governing Documents
For an actual project design, always verify the current edition of the applicable documents. Actual current values, tolerances, and test criteria must come from the CCR manufacturer, approved design, and project specification.
ICAO Annex 14 / FAA Advisory Circulars
Governing requirements for AGL series-circuit design, CCR performance, and lighting system operation.
IS 12291 & CCR Manufacturer Documentation
Indian standard (Constant Current Regulators for Airport Lighting Systems) and manufacturer-specific test procedures for CCR output current, current steps, and protection functions.
DGCA / AAI Requirements
For Indian airport projects, also verify applicable DGCA requirements, AAI requirements, airport-specific technical specifications, project drawings and contract specifications.
Final Engineering Note
Do not select acceptance values from a generic web diagram. Final test criteria should always be developed from the current governing standard, approved design, and manufacturer-approved installation arrangement.
CCR testing and series circuit testing are not two versions of the same test — one confirms the source of controlled current, the other confirms the path and equipment receiving it.
