AGL Secondary Connector Kit

What It Is

AGL Secondary Connector Kit provides the connection interface between the secondary side of an airfield lighting isolating transformer and the lead or connection point of an individual airfield light fixture.

It transfers power from the isolating transformer to the fixture while maintaining the required insulation, sealing and mechanical integrity of the connection.

Selection Depends On

Correct selection depends on the transformer interface, secondary lead construction, fixture connection requirements, cable dimensions and installation environment.

In a typical series-circuit installation the isolating transformer separates the fixture from the primary high-voltage circuit; the secondary connector provides the final electrical interface. Select it as part of the complete transformer-to-fixture connection, not as an independent component.

Compatibility May Depend On

  • Fixture manufacturer
  • Fixture model
  • Fixture lead configuration
  • Fixture wattage
  • Connector arrangement
  • Required electrical characteristics
  • Physical connection dimensions

Fixture Changes

Where a fixture is replaced with a different model, review the secondary connector rather than automatically reusing the existing connector.

Insulation for the Secondary Circuit and Fixture Connection

Relevant Considerations

  • Connector insulation material
  • Dielectric characteristics
  • Insulation resistance
  • Secondary circuit voltage
  • Environmental exposure
  • Cable insulation compatibility

Confirm the required electrical characteristics from the selected connector’s technical documentation.

Transformer Pits, Fixture Bases and Underground Locations

Secondary connections may be exposed to moisture, water, soil and temperature changes. Suitable sealing helps protect against contamination and moisture ingress.

Depending on the Selected Connector Configuration

  • Cable entry sealing
  • Connector-body sealing
  • Moisture resistance
  • Environmental protection
  • Mechanical protection
  • Underground installation
  • Transformer pit installation
  • Fixture-base installation

The complete connection should meet the environmental requirements of the installation.

A Secure Mechanical Interface

  • Excessive cable tension
  • Sharp bends
  • Mechanical stress on connector bodies
  • Damage to cable insulation
  • Improperly supported leads
  • Loose connections

Cable Routing

Route cable with sufficient flexibility for fixture removal and maintenance without transferring unnecessary mechanical stress to the connector.

Installation Procedure

  1. Confirm the series circuit is de-energised and locked out at the regulator under the site permit-to-work

Electrical Safety — Isolation and Lock-Out

WARNING — never open a live series circuit. An open series circuit driven by a constant-current regulator can produce dangerously high voltage. Opening, cutting or disconnecting any part of an energised circuit can cause serious injury or death and damage equipment.

  • De-energise the circuit at the regulator and apply the site lock-out / tag-out (LOTO) procedure before any work
  • Where the circuit must be isolated or shorted, use the series circuit cut-out switch or approved isolation device — not an improvised bypass
  • Verify the circuit is de-energised and the output is isolated before touching conductors, connectors, splices or transformers
  • Do not disconnect or reconnect a fixture's secondary connector while the series circuit is energised: an open secondary on a series isolating transformer can develop hazardous voltage and damage the transformer
  • Work only under the airport's permit-to-work system, using qualified personnel and the manufacturer's instructions
  • Follow the applicable national electrical safety regulations and site procedures

Evaluate Against the Project Specification

Secondary connector requirements should be evaluated against the airport project specification and the requirements of the associated AGL equipment.

Depending on the Project, Requirements May Include

  • FAA AC 150/5345-26E (L-823 connectors, including transformer-lead and fixture-lead connectors), AC 150/5345-7F (L-824 cable) and AC 150/5345-47C (isolation transformers) – verify current editions
  • ICAO Annex 14 Vol. I and Doc 9157 Part 5 (Electrical Systems)
  • Airport authority standards
  • National electrical requirements
  • AGL equipment manufacturer’s requirements
  • Project-specific installation procedures

Important: verify the applicable specification and revision before procurement and installation.

AGL Secondary Connector Kit — Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AGL secondary connector kit?

It provides the connection interface between the secondary side of an airfield lighting isolating transformer and the lead or connection point of an individual light fixture. It transfers power from the transformer to the fixture while maintaining the required insulation, sealing and mechanical integrity.

How is a secondary connector different from a primary connector?

The primary connector sits on the series-circuit cable side, while the secondary connector is the final interface between the transformer secondary lead and the fixture. See the primary connector kit (L-823) page.

What determines the correct secondary connector?

The transformer interface, secondary lead construction, fixture connection requirements, cable dimensions and installation environment. Confirm the lead type, conductor size and construction, insulation type, outside diameter, length where applicable, and the connector termination and fixture connection arrangement.

Can I reuse the existing connector when changing the fixture?

Not automatically. Compatibility can depend on the fixture manufacturer, model, lead configuration, wattage and connector arrangement, so where a fixture is replaced with a different model, review the secondary connector rather than reusing the existing one. Likewise, if a replacement fixture or transformer differs from the original equipment, reassess compatibility.

Where are secondary connector kits used?

Runway edge, threshold, end, centreline and touchdown zone lights, taxiway edge and centreline fixtures, stop bar and runway guard lights, approach lighting, and other compatible series-circuit fixtures, in new installations, rehabilitation, fixture and transformer replacement and spares programmes.

How should a secondary connector be installed?

Confirm the circuit is de-energised and locked out at the regulator, verify the connector configuration and compatibility, check the lead dimensions and construction, prepare the lead per the approved procedure, install the components in the specified sequence, install insulation and sealing components, verify mechanical security and inspect and test the assembly. Follow the connector manufacturer procedure.

How do I avoid moisture problems in pits and bases?

Secondary connections may be exposed to moisture, water, soil and temperature changes, so use suitable cable entry and connector-body sealing and consider water accumulation, drainage, cable routing and accessibility in the transformer pit or fixture base. Allow maintenance personnel to inspect and disconnect the fixture without damaging the lead or connector.

What causes repeated connector failure?

Incorrect connector selection, incorrect lead compatibility, mechanical stress, excessive cable tension, moisture exposure, improper installation, fixture movement or transformer interface problems. Investigate the complete transformer-to-fixture connection rather than replacing the connector alone.

What is checked after installation?

Visual inspection, connector assembly verification, lead condition, mechanical security, sealing condition, insulation testing, continuity testing where applicable, fixture operation and series-circuit performance, following the approved airport maintenance and commissioning procedure.

Is it safe to disconnect a fixture secondary connector while the circuit is energised?

No. An open secondary on a series isolating transformer can develop hazardous voltage and damage the transformer, and an open series circuit driven by a constant-current regulator can produce dangerously high voltage. De-energise at the regulator, apply lock-out / tag-out and work under the permit-to-work system. See the electrical safety warning on this page.

Which standards apply?

Depending on the project, FAA AC 150/5345-26E (L-823 connectors, including transformer-lead and fixture-lead connectors), AC 150/5345-7F (L-824 cable) and AC 150/5345-47C (isolation transformers), ICAO Annex 14 Volume I and Doc 9157 Part 5, together with airport authority standards and manufacturer requirements. Verify current editions before procurement.

What should I provide when requesting a secondary connector kit?

The isolating transformer model and rating, the transformer secondary lead information, the fixture manufacturer, model and wattage, the secondary lead size and construction, existing connector identification, installation environment, quantity and project specification. For replacements, photographs of the transformer lead, existing connector and fixture connection help.
