AGL Unit Converter: Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on the quantities and factors the AGL Unit Converter uses.

What does the AGL Unit Converter do?

It converts metric and imperial units for the quantities that come up in AGL design, photometry and cable work. You pick a quantity, type a value and choose the unit it is in. The All units tab shows every other unit for that quantity at once, the Convert to unit is highlighted, and clicking any result copies its number.

Which quantities can it convert?

Length, area, speed, angle, slope, intensity, illuminance, luminance, power, temperature, torque, AWG conductor sizes and cable resistance.

What conversion factors does it use?

The standard definitions are listed on the Method and reference tab. They include 1 ft = 0.3048 m (exact), 1 NM = 1,852 m (exact), 1 kt = 0.514444 m/s, 1 fc = 10.7639 lx, 1 cd/ft² = 10.7639 cd/m², 1 fL = 3.42626 cd/m², 1 lbf·ft = 1.355818 N·m and 1 kcmil = 0.506707 mm². Every conversion goes through one base unit per quantity, so any unit can be converted to any other in the same group.

How are angle, slope and ratio converted?

Slope % = 100 × tan(θ) and 1:n gives θ = atan(1 ÷ n). Slope and ratio are not linear in the angle, so the tool converts through degrees using the tangent.

How are AWG sizes converted to millimetres and area?

The diameter is d (mm) = 0.127 × 92^((36 − n) ÷ 39), and the area is π ÷ 4 × d². Sizes 1/0 to 4/0 are entered as 0, −1, −2 and −3. AWG is a set of discrete sizes, so a decimal result means no exact standard size exists at that area.

How do I convert VA or kVA to W or kW?

The Power group converts between VA or kVA and W or kW using the power factor you enter. At a power factor of 1.00 they are equal.

What does the unit converter not convert?

It converts units only. Candela and lux measure different things, so going from one to the other needs a distance (illuminance = intensity ÷ distance²). Amps and kVA also need a voltage, so they are not converted here. Resistance uses nominal DC values, so confirm cable figures against your data sheet. Results show up to 8 significant digits, so round to the precision your drawing or specification needs.
