400 Questions, Ten Topics

Every question traces back to one of ten component topics, from isolating transformers and the connector families through cables and junctions to light bases, base plates, frangible couplings and fittings. The bank leans toward working-engineer depth, with troubleshooting, scenario and installation questions alongside the definitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the AGL components question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and the core hardware it covers.

Q1What is the AGL Components question bank?

It is a 400-question reference and drill on the physical components of an airfield ground lighting installation: isolating transformers, primary and secondary connectors, L-823 connectors, AGL cables, junction systems, light bases, base plates, frangible couplings and light fittings. Every question has a model answer, an explanation and tagged key terms, and the whole bank is searchable, filterable and drillable on this page.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Ten topics: Isolating Transformers (65), Primary Connectors (40), Secondary Connectors (35), L-823 Connectors (40), AGL Cables (45), Light Bases (30), Base Plates (25), Frangible Couplings (30), Light Fittings (50), Junction Systems (40).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Four levels: Beginner (88), Intermediate (162), Advanced (133) and Expert (17). About 78% of questions are Intermediate or above. If terminology is still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank first.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (257), troubleshooting (51), short answer (45), scenario-based (34), interview-style (12), multiple choice (1). Troubleshooting and scenario questions together make up about 21% of the bank.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Multiple-choice cards are answered by picking an option. Typed answers are marked with weighted key-term matching (with stemming and typo tolerance) plus overall wording overlap. It is a close local approximation of a marker, not true AI grading, so use it to spot gaps rather than as a formal assessment.

Q6What does an AGL isolating transformer do?

An isolating transformer connects an individual light fitting to the series circuit: its primary sits in the series loop and its secondary feeds the lamp, so the fitting is electrically isolated from the high-voltage primary circuit and a lamp failure does not necessarily interrupt the rest of the loop. The bank has the largest topic on transformers, including selection, testing and failure modes.

Q7What is an L-823 connector?

L-823 is the FAA specification for the plug-and-receptacle connectors and kits used on airport lighting cables. The bank covers their classification by number of conductors and voltage rating, cable compatibility, preparation, assembly and common failure modes.

Q8What is a frangible coupling?

A frangible coupling is the break-away connection between a light fitting stand and its base. It is designed to fracture at a defined point if struck by an aircraft or vehicle, limiting damage and keeping the fitting from becoming a hazard. The bank covers the breakaway principle, installation and inspection.

Q9Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are framed mainly against FAA advisory circulars: AC 150/5345-26 for L-823 connectors (cited in 117 questions), AC 150/5340-30 for installation (cited in 155), AC 150/5340-26 for maintenance (cited in 115), AC 150/5345-47 for isolation transformers (cited in 65), AC 150/5345-42 for light bases, transformer housings and junction boxes (cited in 54), AC 150/5345-46 for light fixtures (cited in 52) and AC 150/5345-7 for L-824 cable (cited in 37). Edition letters were checked in October 2026, and many answers are deliberately worded as subject to the applicable standard, so always check the current edition that governs your project.

Q10Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. Alongside 12 interview-style questions, the 51 troubleshooting and 34 scenario questions mirror how technical interviewers probe fault-finding, installation and component-selection judgement on AGL series circuits.
