400 Questions, Six Topics

Standards questions reward knowing where a requirement comes from and how far it applies. The six topics separate ICAO Annex 14, ICAO requirements, FAA specifications, FAA advisory circulars, lighting characteristics and colour and intensity requirements. About 44% of the bank is Advanced or Expert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the standards question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and which documents it draws on.

Q1What is the ICAO / FAA / Standards question bank?

It is a 400-question reference and drill on the standards behind airfield ground lighting: ICAO Annex 14, FAA advisory circulars, FAA equipment specifications, lighting characteristics, and colour and intensity requirements. Every question has a model answer, an explanation, tagged key terms and the clause or document it draws on, and the whole bank is searchable, filterable and drillable on this page.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Six topics: ICAO Annex 14 (80), ICAO Requirements (73), FAA Specifications (70), FAA Advisory Circulars (82), Lighting Characteristics (40), Colour & Intensity Requirements (55).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Four levels: Beginner (84), Intermediate (142), Advanced (163), Expert (11). Most of the bank is Intermediate or Advanced, so if the basic terminology is still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (284), short answer (53), scenario-based (46), troubleshooting (13) and interview-style (4). Scenario and troubleshooting questions ask how you would apply a requirement to a real installation or fault.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Typed answers are marked with weighted key-term matching (with stemming and typo tolerance) plus overall wording overlap. It is a close local approximation of a marker, not true AI grading, so use it to spot gaps rather than as a formal assessment.

Q6Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are framed mainly against ICAO Annex 14 Volume I (199 questions), FAA AC 150/5345-46F (76 questions), FAA AC 150/5340-30J (54 questions), FAA AC 150/5340-26C (46 questions), with other ICAO, FAA, CIE and industry documents in some. Always check the current edition that governs your project, because clause numbers and values change between editions.

Q7What is the difference between ICAO and FAA requirements?

ICAO Annex 14 sets international standards and recommended practices for aerodromes, while FAA advisory circulars and equipment specifications set US design, installation and equipment requirements. They overlap on many lighting systems but differ in detail, such as colour boundaries, spacing, intensity and photometric methods, so check which source a question is framed against.

Q8Why are the answers worded as 'subject to the applicable standard'?

Requirements depend on the standard, its edition, the runway category and the approved design. Where a value or clause can differ, the answer says so instead of stating one figure as universal.

Q9Can I use these answers as a compliance reference?

Use them as a study and orientation aid. For a design, inspection or certification decision, read the current text of the governing document, because the bank summarises requirements and does not replace the standard.

Q10Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. The 13 troubleshooting and 46 scenario questions mirror how interviewers test whether you can apply a standard, such as choosing the governing document, reading a table correctly and spotting a non-compliant installation.
