300 Questions, Ten Topics

A fitting can pass every electrical check and still fail to guide a pilot. These ten topics cover what the light actually puts out: how much, in which direction, in what colour, and how you prove it. The bank leans toward working-engineer depth, with about 51% of questions at Advanced or Expert level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the photometry question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and the measurements it covers.

Q1What is the Photometry question bank?

It is a 300-question reference and drill on AGL photometry: luminous intensity, candela, beam angles, horizontal and vertical angles, colour measurement, chromaticity, photometric testing and test equipment. Every question has a model answer, an explanation and tagged key terms, and the whole bank is searchable, filterable and drillable on this page.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Ten topics: Photometry Fundamentals (35), Luminous Intensity (35), Candela (25), Beam Angles (35), Horizontal Angles (25), Vertical Angles (30), Colour Measurement (35), Chromaticity (30), Photometric Testing (30), Test Equipment (20).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Four levels: Beginner (44), Intermediate (103), Advanced (138), Expert (15). Most of the bank is Advanced, so if terms like candela or chromaticity are still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank and the Photometry Fundamentals topic.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (216), short answer (34), scenario-based (22), troubleshooting (21) and interview-style (7). Scenario and troubleshooting questions ask what a reading means and what you would check next.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Typed answers are marked with weighted key-term matching (with stemming and typo tolerance) plus overall wording overlap. It is a close local approximation of a marker, not true AI grading, so use it to spot gaps rather than as a formal assessment.

Q6What is the difference between photometry and electrical testing?

Electrical testing checks current, voltage and insulation. Photometry checks the resulting light: intensity, beam distribution, direction and colour. A fixture can pass electrical checks and still fail photometrically because of contamination, optical damage, incorrect aiming or a reassembly error.

Q7What is candela and why does AGL use it?

Candela is the unit of luminous intensity, the light emitted in a given direction. Airfield lights are directional, so a single figure is not enough; intensity is judged at specific angles and against a defined beam pattern.

Q8Why do horizontal and vertical angles matter?

Aiming errors change what the pilot sees. The bank covers how beam direction is defined against a reference axis in each plane, how angles are measured, and what a misaimed fixture does to the delivered intensity.

Q9What is a goniophotometer used for?

It measures luminous intensity or other optical quantities as a function of emission angle, which is how a fixture's beam pattern is characterised. The Test Equipment topic compares it with photometers, illuminance meters, colorimeters, spectroradiometers and field photometry systems.

Q10Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are framed mainly against FAA AC 150/5345-46F (228 questions), FAA AC 150/5340-26C (72 questions), FAA AC 150/5340-30J (44 questions), CIE 015:2018 (27 questions), with CIE publications and other documents in some. Always check the current edition that governs your project.

Q11Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. The 21 troubleshooting and 22 scenario questions mirror how technical interviewers probe measurement judgement, such as reading a photometric result, spotting a misaimed or degraded fixture and deciding what to do next.
