400 Questions, Nine Topics

Every question traces back to one of nine runway lighting topics, from edge and threshold lights through centreline, touchdown zone, REIL and guard lights to high- and low-intensity system design. The bank leans toward working-engineer depth, with troubleshooting, scenario and inspection questions alongside the definitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the runway lighting question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and the core systems it covers.

Q1What is the Runway Lighting question bank?

It is a 400-question reference and drill on runway lighting systems: edge, threshold, end, centreline and touchdown zone lighting, REIL, runway guard lights, and high- and low-intensity lighting. Every question has a model answer, an explanation and tagged key terms, and the whole bank is searchable, filterable and drillable on this page.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Nine topics: Runway Edge Lights (70), Threshold Lights (45), Runway End Lights (30), Runway Centreline Lights (60), Touchdown Zone Lights (50), Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL) (30), Runway Guard Lights (30), High Intensity Lighting (40), Low Intensity Lighting (45).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Four levels: Beginner (32), Intermediate (174), Advanced (191) and Interview (3). The bank is weighted toward working-engineer depth, with about 92% of questions at Intermediate or above. If terminology is still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank first.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (220), troubleshooting (67), scenario-based (48), multiple choice (22), interview-style (22), short answer (17) and inspection (4). Fault-finding and scenario questions make up nearly a third of the bank.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Multiple-choice cards are answered by picking an option. Typed answers are marked with weighted key-term matching (with stemming and typo tolerance) plus overall wording overlap. It is a close local approximation of a marker, not true AI grading, so use it to spot gaps rather than as a formal assessment.

Q6What do runway edge lights do?

Runway edge lights are installed along the edges of a runway to define its lateral limits and give pilots visual guidance on alignment and usable width, particularly at night or in reduced visibility. Their colour, spacing and intensity depend on the runway type and the applicable standard.

Q7What is the difference between low-, medium- and high-intensity runway lighting?

The classifications relate mainly to the specified luminous intensity and photometric performance of the lighting system. Low-intensity systems suit applications where a lower optical output is adequate, and high-intensity systems provide substantially greater output for more demanding visibility conditions. Which class applies to a given runway has to come from the applicable standard and the approved aerodrome design.

Q8What are runway guard lights?

Runway guard lights (RGL) are yellow warning lights that flash alternately at a runway holding position to alert pilots and vehicle drivers that they are about to enter an active runway. The bank covers the FAA and ICAO arrangements, including how they are installed, controlled and inspected.

Q9What are Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL)?

REIL are a pair of flashing lights placed at the runway threshold to give quick, positive identification of the approach end of a runway, especially where the runway is hard to pick out against surrounding lights or terrain. The bank has a full topic on REIL design, operation and troubleshooting.

Q10Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are framed against ICAO Annex 14 (referenced in 243 questions) and FAA advisory circulars, most often AC 150/5340-30 design and installation (222), AC 150/5345-46 light fixtures (102), AC 150/5345-47 isolation transformers (59), AC 150/5345-10 constant current regulators (46), AC 150/5340-26 maintenance (18) and AC 150/5345-51 for REIL (22), with Indian standards such as IS 12290 for isolating transformers (5) and IS 11071 for inset fittings in a few. Edition letters were checked in October 2026, and many answers are deliberately worded as subject to the applicable standard, so always check the current edition that governs your project.

Q11Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. Alongside 22 interview-style questions, the 67 troubleshooting and 48 scenario questions mirror how technical interviewers probe fault-finding, inspection and compliance judgement on runway lighting.
