Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the taxiway lighting question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and the core systems it covers.

Q1What is the Taxiway Lighting question bank?

It is a 300-question reference and drill on taxiway lighting: edge and centreline lights, stop bars, intermediate holding position lights, runway guard lights, lead-on and lead-off lights, and apron lighting. Every question has a model answer, an explanation and tagged key terms, and the whole bank is searchable, filterable and drillable on this page.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Eight topics: Taxiway Edge Lights (45), Taxiway Centreline Lights (60), Stop Bars (40), Intermediate Holding Position Lights (25), Runway Guard Lights (25), Lead-On Lights (25), Lead-Off Lights (20), Apron Lighting (60).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Three levels: Beginner (31), Intermediate (187) and Advanced (82). About 90% of the bank is Intermediate or above, so if terminology is still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank first.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (188), scenario-based (46), troubleshooting (32), multiple choice (21), interview-style (9), short answer (2) and inspection (2). Scenario and troubleshooting questions make up about a quarter of the bank.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Multiple-choice cards are answered by picking an option. Typed answers are marked with weighted key-term matching (with stemming and typo tolerance) plus overall wording overlap. It is a close local approximation of a marker, not true AI grading, so use it to spot gaps rather than as a formal assessment.

Q6What is the difference between taxiway edge lights and centreline lights?

Taxiway edge lights define the lateral limits of the taxiway, while centreline lights are in-pavement fixtures that give a continuous illuminated path along the taxi route, particularly in darkness or reduced visibility. Edge lights are normally blue and centreline lights normally green, subject to the applicable standard and the approved design.

Q7What is a stop bar?

A stop bar is a row of red lights across a taxiway at a holding position, showing pilots and vehicle drivers that they must stop before proceeding. Because it is a safety-critical indication, its control logic has to match the airport's movement-control procedures, and the bank has a full topic on stop bar design, control and troubleshooting.

Q8What are intermediate holding position lights?

Intermediate holding position lights are visual aids installed at an intermediate holding position to clearly identify the location where an aircraft or vehicle is required to hold. The bank covers their purpose, installation, control and fault-finding.

Q9What are lead-on and lead-off lights?

Both are taxiway centreline lights at the runway interface. Lead-on lights guide pilots entering a runway from a taxiway, and lead-off lights guide pilots and vehicle operators exiting a runway and entering a taxiway. Colour-coded centreline systems use green and yellow in runway-related areas to give extra operational information.

Q10Why does a taxiway lighting bank include apron lighting?

Apron lighting is part of the same airside visual environment. The bank treats apron floodlighting as a topic of its own, covering illuminance, uniformity, glare, pole locations, control strategy and commissioning, with the emphasis on design, commissioning and maintenance of floodlit apron areas.

Q11Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are framed against ICAO Annex 14 (143 questions), FAA AC 150/5340-30 in its current and earlier editions (183), EASA CS ADR-DSN.M.750 (30) and FAA AC 150/5300-13 (27), with other standards in a few. Many answers are deliberately worded as subject to the applicable standard, so always check the current edition that governs your project.

Q12Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. Alongside 9 interview-style questions, the 32 troubleshooting and 46 scenario questions mirror how technical interviewers probe fault-finding, holding-position safety and commissioning judgement on taxiway and apron lighting.
