The CCR local control

Local control lets an engineer operate a CCR at the cabinet. It is used for testing and maintenance, and it must be returned to remote when the work is done.

The Fact Local control

1Two ways to command a CCR

In remote mode the CCR follows commands from the control system, such as the ALCMS. In local mode it follows the switches at the unit. Only one source is in control at a time.

2Why local control exists

It lets an engineer switch the output on, off or to a chosen step at the cabinet for testing, fault finding and maintenance, without the control system. It also gives a way to operate if remote control is lost. Inform airfield operations before taking a CCR to local control, and check that the series circuit is complete (no open loop) and that nobody is working on it before switching on.

3Return it to remote

A CCR left in local mode ignores the control system, so the lights may not follow the air traffic controller. Always return the selector to remote and confirm the step before leaving the site, and tell airfield operations it is back in remote.

Teaching diagram: Selector layout and priority rules differ between models. Follow the manufacturer manual and the site procedure. Isolate, lock out and prove dead before opening the cabinet. Never open or touch an energised series circuit. Once it is isolated and proved dead, earth it as the site procedure requires before working on it: a series circuit can carry lethal voltage even at low current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What is the difference between local and remote control?

Local means the CCR takes commands from its own switches. Remote means it takes commands from a control system such as the ALCMS.

Q2Why must the selector go back to remote?

In local mode the CCR ignores the control system. If it is left there, the lights will not follow normal operational commands.

Q3Can I work on the circuit with the CCR in local mode?

Local mode is not isolation. Isolate and lock out the CCR before working on the series circuit, because the output can carry dangerous voltage.

Q4Does the ALCMS show local mode?

Many installations report local or remote status to the control system. It depends on the interface; check the site documentation.
