Division 14 · SGN · Illuminated Airfield Signage

Airfield Sign Maintenance

The standardized maintenance framework for illuminated airfield signage — mandatory signs, direction signs, location signs, information signs, runway exit signs, and every other illuminated sign within the airport's AGL system. This division covers preventive, corrective and special maintenance across the full asset: structure, housing, LED modules, driver, wiring, connectors, environmental sealing, message, orientation and final visibility.

Core principle: ILLUMINATION ≠ COMPLETE SIGN CONDITION. A sign may be electrically healthy but operationally unsatisfactory — LED modules illuminated while the face is damaged or the message is unclear. Sign maintenance is not complete when the sign illuminates; the message, orientation, visibility, structural condition and illumination performance must also be verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about airfield sign maintenance, based on the topics in this division.

9 QUESTIONS
Q1What is airfield sign maintenance in the AGL Maintenance Handbook?

It is the standardized maintenance framework for illuminated airfield signage, including mandatory, direction, location, information and runway exit signs and every other illuminated sign in the airport's AGL system.

Q2What does Division 14 of the AGL Maintenance Handbook cover?

Division 14 (Airfield Sign Maintenance) contains 40 topics in three groups: Group A Preventive Maintenance (20 topics), Group B Corrective Maintenance (14 topics) and Group C Special Maintenance (6 topics).

Q3Does an illuminated sign mean the sign is in good condition?

No. Illumination does not equal complete sign condition. A sign may be electrically healthy but operationally unsatisfactory, for example with LED modules lit while the face is damaged or the message is unclear.

Q4What ten conditions is a sign judged against?

Structural integrity, correct sign identification, correct orientation, message visibility, illumination, LED performance, driver performance, electrical integrity, environmental protection and mounting stability.

Q5What is the sign maintenance sequence?

Nine steps: Identify, Clean, Inspect, Repair/Replace, Illuminate, Verify Message, Verify Orientation, Verify Visibility and Record.

Q6How are sign conditions classified?

Five classes: Good (routine PM), Acceptable (monitor or PM), Deteriorating (planned corrective maintenance), Defective (corrective maintenance) and Critical (priority or emergency response).

Q7How should a reported sign abnormality be troubleshot?

Confirm the sign ID, then check the supply, driver, LED modules, wiring, connectors, optical and illumination condition, housing and sealing, message and face, and orientation. Correct the defect, test illumination, verify message and visibility, return to service and record.

Q8What does the sign maintenance decision matrix recommend?

A dirty sign face or optical surface is cleaned, a failed LED module is replaced, uneven illumination triggers investigation of the LED, driver and optical system, water ingress means correcting the source and restoring sealing, incorrect orientation is realigned, and civil-work disturbance is inspected and restored.

Q9What should the sign maintenance record capture?

Four groups of information: asset information (airport, sign ID, location, type, legend, manufacturer, model, serial number), maintenance information (date, work order, type, technician, supervisor and the condition of each component), maintenance performed, and verification and closure (illumination, uniformity, message, orientation, visibility, final condition, return-to-service status, evidence and remarks).
