Selecting and Installing the Base
Selection Should Consider
- Airfield fixture type
- Fixture mounting arrangement
- Required installation depth
- Pavement or foundation construction
- Cable-entry requirements
- Mounting stem dimensions
- Frangible coupling arrangement
- Mechanical loading
- Drainage and environmental conditions
- Existing base arrangement for replacement projects
Installation
The base should be installed in accordance with the approved project drawings and the requirements of the associated lighting fixture. Set the top of the base and the frangible point at the levels shown in the drawings so that the fixture sits at the correct height, with the base level, plumb, well drained and the cable entry sealed. Never disconnect primary connectors or transformer connections while the series circuit is energised: de-energise at the CCR and follow the site lock-out procedure.
Confirm Before Procurement
Cable Interface
The deep base can provide the service interface for cable routing to the associated elevated fixture. Coordinate cable-entry selection with:
- Primary or secondary cable arrangement
- Cable diameter
- Connector configuration
- Fixture lead
- Transformer arrangement
- Internal routing requirements
Confirm the interface before procurement for compatibility with the complete AGL installation. A deep base can often house the isolating transformer; confirm whether the transformer sits in the base or in a separate housing.
Mounting Compatibility
Deep bases can be used with compatible components such as:
- Mounting stems
- Frangible couplings
- Elevated airfield light fixtures
- Associated fixing hardware
Check the complete mounting stack for dimensional and mechanical compatibility before installation.
Review Existing Details First
Useful Information
- Existing fixture type
- Existing base dimensions
- Base depth
- Mounting stem dimensions
- Cable arrangement
- Frangible coupling type
- Existing pavement or foundation details
Where Dimensions Are Uncertain
For rehabilitation and replacement projects, review existing installation details before selecting a replacement deep base. Photographs, drawings or site measurements can assist with product selection.

Principle
FAA practice separates non-load-bearing bases from load-bearing bases for locations exposed to aircraft or vehicle traffic. Confirm the base class, depth and material against the fixture, the pavement structure and the applicable edition before procurement. Elevated runway and taxiway lights must be frangible and low enough to clear propellers and engine pods, so the frangible point and installed height are set by the coupling and stem fitted above the base.
AGL Deep Base — Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AGL deep base?
A deep base provides the structural and service interface for selected elevated airfield lighting installations and associated cable connections. It gives a stable mounting point for compatible elevated AGL fixtures while accommodating the required cable entry and mounting hardware.
What is a deep base used for?
It is used for runway and taxiway elevated lighting fixtures, airfield visual-aid installations, replacement of existing mounting bases, new airfield lighting installations and rehabilitation projects. Select the base together with the fixture, mounting stem and frangible coupling where applicable.
What is the difference between non-load-bearing and load-bearing bases?
FAA practice separates non-load-bearing bases (L-867) from load-bearing bases (L-868) for locations exposed to aircraft or vehicle traffic, under AC 150/5345-42K. Confirm the base class, depth and material against the fixture, the pavement structure and the applicable edition before procurement.
What is the difference between a deep base and a shallow base?
A deep base gives a deep installation configuration for elevated fixtures, while the shallow base is for selected installations requiring a shallow mounting arrangement. See the shallow base page.
Where is the frangible point of an elevated light?
It is set by the frangible coupling fitted above the base, together with the stem, not by the base itself. Elevated runway and taxiway lights must be frangible and low enough to clear propellers and engine pods, so the frangible point and installed height are set by the coupling and stem. See the frangible coupling page.
What should be considered when selecting a deep base?
The airfield fixture type and mounting arrangement, required installation depth, pavement or foundation construction, cable-entry requirements, mounting stem dimensions, frangible coupling arrangement, mechanical loading, drainage and environmental conditions, and the existing base arrangement for replacement projects.
Can the isolating transformer sit inside the deep base?
A deep base can often house the isolating transformer, so confirm whether the transformer sits in the base or in a separate housing. Coordinate cable-entry selection with the primary or secondary cable arrangement, cable diameter, connector configuration, fixture lead and transformer arrangement.
What hardware is compatible with a deep base?
Compatible components include mounting stems, frangible couplings, elevated airfield light fixtures and associated fixing hardware. Check the complete mounting stack for dimensional and mechanical compatibility before installation. See the mounting stem page.
How should a deep base be installed?
In accordance with the approved project drawings and the fixture requirements. Set the top of the base and the frangible point at the levels shown in the drawings so the fixture sits at the correct height, with the base level, plumb, well drained and the cable entry sealed.
Is it safe to disconnect connectors in a base while the circuit is energised?
No. Never disconnect primary connectors or transformer connections while the series circuit is energised. De-energise at the CCR and follow the site lock-out procedure.
What information helps when replacing an existing base?
The existing fixture type, base dimensions and depth, mounting stem dimensions, cable arrangement, frangible coupling type and the pavement or foundation details. Photographs, drawings or site measurements can help where dimensions are uncertain.
Which standards apply to deep bases?
References include ICAO Annex 14 Volume I (frangibility of elevated lights, Chapter 5), ICAO Doc 9157 Part 5, FAA AC 150/5345-42K (September 2024) covering L-867 and L-868 bases, and FAA AC 150/5370-10 Item L-125 (installation of airport lighting systems, including bases), together with the project drawings and the fixture manufacturer instructions.
