What is approach-light intensity?
The adjustable brightness of the approach lights, stepped up or down so the pattern is clear in any light without dazzling the pilot.
Approach lights must be seen at a distance in all the conditions the system is meant for, from a clear night to daylight and fog. A single fixed brightness cannot do that, so the intensity is adjustable in steps.
The constant current regulator changes the circuit current to move between steps. Lower steps suit a clear night, where bright lights would dazzle. Higher steps suit daylight or poor visibility, where dim lights would be lost. The setting is chosen from the control system and coordinated with the threshold and runway edge lights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1What is approach-light intensity?
The brightness at which the approach lights are operated. It is adjustable so the pattern stays clearly visible without dazzling the pilot.
Q2Why is approach-light intensity adjustable?
Conditions range from a clear night to bright daylight or fog. One fixed brightness would be too glaring in one case and too faint in the other.
Q3How is intensity changed?
The constant current regulator drives the circuit at different current settings, which gives stepped brightness levels. Many installations use three or five steps.
Q4Who selects the intensity?
Normally air traffic control, through the airfield lighting control system, based on visibility and ambient light. Some systems also offer automatic selection.
Q5Is approach-light intensity coordinated with other lights?
Yes. It is set together with the runway threshold and edge lights so the whole visual picture stays balanced.
