What are mechanical components?

The structural parts of a fixture. They hold the optics at the right height and aim, carry the loads of wind, blast and vibration, and give way at the planned break point.

The Fact Fixture construction

A lamp or LED, a lens and a driver do nothing useful unless they are held in the right place. The mechanical components are the frame that does it.

1They hold and position

The body houses the optics and electronics, a clamp ring holds the lens, the stem or mast raises the head to the right height, and the base flange fixes it to the base. Together they keep the beam where it is aimed.

2They carry loads and yield

The structure must carry wind, jet blast, vibration and service loads, yet it must also give way if struck. The frangible coupling is the deliberate weak point, so the rest of the structure is built strong and the break happens only where planned.

3Check the frame, not just the light

A bent or loose structure shifts the beam even when the lamp is fine. Look for cracks, corrosion, a leaning stem, loose clamps and fasteners, damaged threads and misalignment, and replace damaged parts with the correct manufacturer part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What are the mechanical components of an airfield light fixture?

The structural parts: the body or housing, the stem or mast, the frangible coupling, the base flange or mounting plate, clamps and brackets, and the fasteners that join them.

Q2Why does the mechanical structure matter?

It keeps the optics in the correct position and aim, carries wind, jet blast, vibration and service loads, and protects the inside. A bent or loose structure shifts the beam even when the lamp and lens are fine.

Q3What should be checked on mechanical components?

Look for cracks, corrosion, a bent or leaning stem, loose clamps and fasteners, damaged threads, and fixtures that are out of alignment. Replace damaged parts with the correct manufacturer part.
