What is an optical chamber?

The sealed space inside the fixture head where the light source, reflector and lens work together. It holds them in exact positions, and keeps them clean and dry so the beam stays true.

The Fact Fixture construction

A beam is not made by the light source alone. It is made by the source and its optics working together, and the optical chamber is the space that holds them in the exact positions they need.

1It holds the optics in place

Inside the chamber, the light source sits at the focus of the reflector in a typical reflector design, so the reflector sends the light it catches out as a near-parallel beam, with the lens or prism in front to shape the beam. LED fixtures hold the LEDs and their optics in the same kind of fixed relationship. Their positions and angles to each other decide where the light goes, so the chamber fixes them rigidly together.

2It stays clean and dry

A seal closes the chamber against the weather. Dust, moisture, condensation and film on the lens or reflector absorb and scatter light, so output falls and the beam can cloud or distort even when the source is working well. Some fixtures add a pressure-equalization vent so the sealed chamber can balance pressure without letting water in.

3Check without disturbing

Look for fogging, water drops, film or dust, a discoloured or damaged reflector and a source that has shifted. Do not disturb the alignment, clean only as the manufacturer allows, and replace damaged optics with the correct part.

Schematic: chamber layout, reflector and lens arrangement differ between products. Work under the permit-to-work, with the circuit isolated and proved dead before a fixture is opened, and never open a sealed optical chamber outside a controlled procedure. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and parts, and confirm against the standards edition in force.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What is the optical chamber in an airfield light fixture?

The enclosed space inside the fixture head where the light source, reflector and lens or prism are held in exact positions so they work together to form the beam.

Q2Why does the optical chamber need to stay sealed?

Dust, moisture and film on the optical surfaces absorb and scatter light and cut output. Condensation can cloud the lens, and dirt can build up on the reflector. A sealed chamber keeps these out.

Q3What should be checked in the optical chamber?

Look for fogging, water drops, dust or a film on the lens and reflector, a discoloured or damaged reflector, and a light source that has shifted from its position. Do not disturb the optical alignment, and clean only as the manufacturer allows.
