Remarks on why AGL matters — and why it deserves to be understood, not overlooked.
"Airfield Ground Lighting never leaves the ground — yet nothing it does has meaning until an aircraft is in the air."
Hi everyone. I am Rahul Sharma, and for the last several years, my work has centred on a system most people never think about — Airfield Ground Lighting, or AGL.
Ask someone what makes an airport work, and they will talk about the runway, the aircraft, the terminal, the control tower. Almost no one mentions the lights. And yet, on a foggy morning or a moonless night, those lights are the only language the runway speaks to the pilot.
Picture a pilot on final approach with little visual reference beyond the cockpit glass — no horizon, no skyline, sometimes barely a shape below. In that moment, runway and taxiway lights stop being lights. They become a visual guidance system — a sequence of colour, spacing and intensity that tells the pilot exactly where the runway begins, where it ends, and how to move safely once wheels are down. Aviation safety, at that instant, is written in lighting.
"Aviation safety, at that instant, is written in lighting."
My work lives inside that system — runway lights, taxiway lights, isolating transformers, cabling, connectors, signage, control systems, and photometry — the discipline of measuring whether a light is actually doing its job, not just appearing to.
And photometry is where AGL becomes genuinely fascinating. A light can look perfectly bright to the human eye and still fail the standard it must meet. Intensity, beam spread, colour, uniformity — every one of these has a tolerance, and every tolerance exists because someone, somewhere, is trusting that light during an approach.
That trust is why we hold every installation against ICAO, FAA, and applicable Indian Standards. To me, these documents are not paperwork to be filed — they are safety requirements translated into voltage, current, beam angle and candela, engineered into the ground so that pilots never have to think twice about what they're seeing.
Because the margin for error is thin. A cracked lens, a degraded cable, a transformer running out of tolerance, one circuit reading slightly off-spec — none of it looks dramatic on the ground. In the air, on a low-visibility approach, it can be the difference between a clear guidance picture and a dangerous guess. That is why, in this field, no component is considered small.
"Knowledge shared is safety multiplied."
This is also why I built the AGL Knowledge Hub — because this knowledge should not live only with a handful of specialists. Every engineer who understands photometry a little better, every student who can read a circuit diagram a little sooner, every airport professional who can spot a non-compliant fixture before it becomes a report — makes the entire system safer.
So yes — Airfield Ground Lighting never leaves the ground. But its purpose was never about the ground. It exists for the seconds when an aircraft is in the air, in the dark, trusting what it sees below. That is the standard I hold myself to, and it comes down to three commitments:
Precision in Every Component
Accuracy in Every Test
Safety in Every Approach
Thank you — Rahul Sharma

What airport lighting testing covers, from electrical tests to photometry and acceptance. Confirm all criteria against the approved specification and current standards.
Airport light testing equipment covers two groups. On the electrical side: insulation resistance testers, earth testers, multimeters and clamp meters for circuits, cables, connectors and transformers. On the optical side: calibrated photometric instruments for light output. Test gear should be in calibration and suitable for the circuit being tested.
Airfield lighting photometric testing measures the light output of installed fixtures against the specified photometric requirements. Our field photometry covers runway and taxiway lights, PAPI verification and signage luminance, with performance analysis and non-conformance summaries.
Airport lighting transformer testing checks isolating transformers for insulation condition, winding continuity and correct operation within the series circuit. It is carried out during commissioning and again as part of inspection and maintenance, with audit reports and recommendations.
An AGL technical specification India document sets out what is supplied, installed, tested and accepted on an airfield lighting project. Our consultancy prepares specifications, technical drawings, BOQs and compliance reports aligned to ICAO, FAA, DGCA, IS and IEC. The approved specification decides the final acceptance criteria.
Airport lighting earth testing verifies the earthing of the airfield lighting installation: earth electrodes, bonding and earth continuity. It confirms that fault currents and surges have a sound path to earth. Results are recorded and compared with the specification.
Airport lighting insulation testing measures the insulation resistance of cables, connectors and isolating transformers. It finds deterioration or moisture before it causes a circuit fault. The circuit is isolated first, and results are compared with the specified limits and earlier records.
Airport lighting continuity testing confirms an unbroken conductive path through the series circuit: cables, connectors and transformer windings. It finds open circuits and poor terminations.
Airport lighting acceptance testing is the set of tests carried out at handover to show that the installation meets the specification and applicable standards. It combines electrical tests, functional and photometric checks and documentation. The system is accepted when results are recorded and defects are closed.
Airport lighting periodic testing repeats electrical and photometric tests at scheduled intervals during operation. It tracks condition and catches deterioration early. The interval is set by the airport's maintenance programme and applicable standards.
An airport lighting testing checklist normally covers circuit identification, insulation, continuity, earth, CCR output, intensity steps, connector condition, photometric checks where required, and records of results and defects. The approved procedure and specification define the full list.
FAA airport lighting testing follows the requirements of FAA AC 150 where an airport or project applies them. Other projects follow ICAO Annex 14 and local requirements such as DGCA, IS and IEC. Confirm which apply against the project specification.
